The Pitch

May 31, 2024

Homelessness is a problem in our cities and it only seems to get worse. Homelessness is largely forgotten, ignored, or somehow tolerated in man of our cities. Money gets thrown at it, as though it were a scourge that needs to be swept under the rug. This top-down approach is not working. What we need is a bottom-up approach, which starts with compassion and dignity.

The time is now. The homeless population is growing, there is a greater disparity between rich and poor, housing costs are skyrocketing, and illicit drug use is rampant.

Imagine a vibrant, bustling city with no homeless problem, with resources in place to address the problem from the ground floor. A proactive, as opposed to reactive approach is attainable.

There will be challenges. There will be those who will refuse help; there will be those who are strung out on drugs. The approach is the same - compassion, dignity and unlimited patience. An approach based on serving, not merely helping.

Through donations at the grass-roots level, local, state, and national and corporate funding, in addition to a community of volunteers, we can make this work. It’s the right thing to do. It’s the moral thing to do. As Dr. Martin Luther King so eloquently said, “We are all woven together into the fabric of life. What affects one, affects us all.”

Peace,

Dan
